Looking for a microscope for your child? Don’t want a toy microscope that gives poor quality optics as would be found in a local toy store? A microscope for a kid would most likely be a simple compound light system that has 4x, 10x, and 40x objectives. Combine this with a 10x eyepiece, and the resulting magnification the child will see is 40x, 100x, and 400x. If the child or teacher inserts a 15x eyepiece, then the magnifications would be increased accordingly. The resultant compounded magnification of a light microscope is the multiplication of each magnifying lens. So to calculate what total magnification your child is viewing, simply multiply the objective lens power by the eyepiece power. Most children will not need a 100x oil immersion lens. This gets into a higher level of learning that is typically used only in high school biology classes and above. It also entails the use of immersion oil, that can be damaging if incorrectly used on the other microscope objectives. So it is generally not recommended to use the 100x oil lens for children’s use.
The other type of microscope for a kid is a low power stereoscopic dissecting microscope. This optical device for your child allows simple and easy viewing of common backyard specimens such as insects, leaves, flowers, pollen, stamen, dissected frogs and bugs, bark, and a host of other easy to find nature items. It provides easier viewing than the compound light microscope that has a much higher power magnification. The parent or teacher needs to first determine what the specific application is for their child. Is this for a beginning biology class in school? If so, the teacher needs to review the curriculum to see if a high power magnification or a low power magnification is more applicable.
Unfortunately, these are two types of microscopes. One (the stereo dissection microscope) gives good depth of field and is easy to focus on a more 3D type of specimen. The other (the high power compound microscope) gives a narrow depth of field making it necessary for the specimen to generally placed on a blank glass microscope slide and place a glass cover slip over the specimen to keep it flat. Liquid specimens (blood for example) or specimens suspended in liquid (tiny larvae found in pond water for example) would need the high power compound kid microscope.
